Dr. Abraham Verghese in conversation with Prof. Sameer Pandya

Event Date:

Wednesday, February 21, 2024 - 11:30am to 12:30pm

Last February, Professor Sameer Pandya hosted best-selling author Dr. Abraham Verghese for a special event in his Winter 2024 class.

Here’s Sameer’s reflection on the event:

I had the incredible pleasure of being in conversation with Dr. Abraham Verghese, who wears many hats: professor of medicine at Stanford Medical School, author of two novels (Cutting for Stone and The Covenant of Water) and two works of non-fiction (The Tennis Partner and My Own Country). I have been reading Dr. Verghese’s work for years and I felt lucky to have a chance to speak with him. I had so many questions for him—on the relationship between writing and practicing medicine, the novels that were important to him when he was growing up, his growing up, first in Ethiopia and later in India, and his move to the United States, and on and on. He was gracious and humane and generous in his answers. The best part of the conversation was the Q&A with the students, who asked incredible questions. As our 75 minutes together were coming to a close, everyone in the room could have sat for another hour, listening to his insights.
